Take Part Spring 2014

Opportunity for Birmingham Kids to Work with World Famous Performer!

Claire Dowie, one of the UK's finest playwrights is returning to Birmingham through the presence of Stage2; Brum's busiest youth theatre. Claire, Stage2's Patron, has given personal permission (and ongoing support) to the young company as they embark on the intrepid task of asking; Why is John Lennon Wearing a Skirt?
The play, popular for it's in-yer-face attitude towards gender, the workplace and social peculiarities - particularly when it comes to clothing – celebrates it's 25th anniversary this year and whilst Claire herself tours the world with a reworking of the original monologue, Stage2 (also in their 25th year) brings the script to life in a completely different way.

Why is John Lennon Wearing a Skirt? is a powerful exploration of stereotyping and pressures to conform – a journey through a girl’s life that includes frustrated encounters with skirts, incredulous encounters with tights and disastrous encounters with boys. She gets through school by pretending to be in the Beatles and her first office job by pretending to be in the Army. With the exciting addition of a live band on stage, a huge cast of Birmingham’s best bring the perils of being a teenager hilariously and sometimes horrifically to life!

And the best part? Anyone who wants to can get involved! (between the ages of 7-21 – sorry parents!). Stage2 is currently recruiting for the Spring Term 2014 which means anyone (regardless of previous experience!) can be a part of this unique opportunity, being an integral part of this full-scale award winning piece of theatre. So, if you're inquisitive and want find out why this famous Beatle is wearing a skirt, work with a famous practitioner, be part of a huge show or just want to get involved in Birmingham’s busiest youth company, all you have to do is turn up on the 25th January! If you or a young person you know would like to get involved please contact info@stage2.org or check out our website for details; www.stage2.org

Stage2 Options Spring Term 2014

Production:

Claire Dowie’s Why is John Lennon Wearing a Skirt?

The Crescent Theatre 17 – 19 April 2014 (Production Week starts 13th April)
Directed by Liz Light
Musical Direction Charlie Reilly

Come and ‘…see how confident and daring the brilliant Stage2 can be’. Birmingham Post on our last version of WIJLWAS? In 2004

By popular demand we revisit this fantastic show written by our very own Patron, in the Crescent Main House using both galleries, with as many members as possible and with a live band on stage playing Beatles songs throughout!! We have special permission from Claire herself to rework two of her monologues into one great play, tailored specially to current Stage2 members. It focuses on stereotyping and the pressures to conform, as we journey through a girl’s life  - seeing frustrated encounters with skirts, incredulous encounters with tights and disastrous encounters with boys. She gets through school by pretending to be in the Beatles and her first office job by pretending to be in the army. The writing is fast and furious and very, very funny. This play is suitable for all ages and both sexes (several people play the main role and there are some great male parts too) - as we bring the perils of being a teenager hilariously and sometimes horrifically to life.

Anyone can be involved in this production on stage or in a backstage role. Look out for the contract about Auditions for cast and band roles and Interviews for the backstage team.
Anyone can audition on Sat 30th Nov, 6 - 7.30pm  (Assistant & Tech Interviews 5.15–6pm)
Anyone can be in the Chorus by signing up at the Intro; Sat 25th January 2014

Skills Workshop: Playwriting, Poetry and the Spoken Word

Run by Alex Butler With Chloe Jones
Have you ever seen a play or heard a poet read their poems aloud and thought ‘I wish I could do that’? Well, guess what – you can. In this workshop we’ll be unpicking what it means to write a poem, the different ways to devise, write and gain inspiration for writing a play (don’t worry we don’t expect the next Hamlet) and exploring the complexities of performing the spoken word. We’ll be taking set texts and stirring them up, looking at past and current practitioners and trying out their styles whilst developing our own voices. We’ll gain skills in storytelling and devising narratives as well as playing with Slam Poetry and exploring the work of the Beat Poets. Don’t know what that means? Join in and find out!

No previous experience required but you must be prepared to write and keep notes and have excellent attendance as this is a Skills Option.

We also have our usual General Drama (for people wanting a grounding in Drama or who can not attend every week) in the morning and Stage1 for 7-10 year olds wanting a fun option) in the Afternoons!
