Joining Stage2

Joining Stage2

Stage2 is open to absolutely all 9-21 year olds from Birmingham and its surrounding regions. There is no audition to join Stage2, and no previous experience is required, places are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
As well as the educational benefits of Stage2 we have numerous fun, social events that all our members may choose to take advantage of which are explained in our weekly admin slot. We offer at least 4 Saturday options each term, designed to cater for our members‚ a wide range of interests and abilities. Please note we cannot always guarantee everyone their first choice, we do however guarantee that there is room for everyone in the productions (every single term)!

You will also have the opportunity to join our Marketing and Fund-Raising Committees, learning useful skills and gaining real work experience. Schedules and diaries are given out at the Intro Session and options are explained in more detail, with all times and commitment levels confirmed for the whole term.
Please phone 07961 018841 or Email info@stage2.org if you have any queries at any time!

Stage2: Spring 2013 - Options

We have many great options for you to choose from this term, why not check out below to see what you might like to do..

Mornings 9.30am – 1pm

Production: The Tempest Cast and Chorus

The Tempest has been performed in more different ways than any other work in the cannon, if not the world. It has so many of Shakespeare’s stock characters and themes that it is really useful for anyone studying any of his plays. Is it a pantomime, a fairy tale, a love story, an adventure, a moral tale or actually an elaborate game of chess? How much do we see mystical magic and how much skilled illusion? Is Prospero an Icarus or a Faustus? Who has the upper hand in this ‘brave new world’ - the native islanders or the educated voyagers? Physical action, slapstick comic routines, marvellous language, elegance, earthiness, deep sadness and conniving manipulation morph the story and drive the characters through a maze of increasing complexity, clashing fantasy and reality.
Stage2 has a long established history of presenting clear, accessible (and 5 star) Shakespearian productions with dynamic casts of over 100 young people, and this show will be no exception. ‘A team of talent, sublimely declining to put a foot wrong…. a first night standing ovation, then yet again Stage2 sent its audience home in grateful and heady disbelief, although old hands among the patrons know that this happens every time.’ Behind the Arras.  After last year’s deep and dark Romeo and Juliet, here is a colourful show that all ages will enjoy being either on stage or in the audience (at least once the storm has settled….!)
The cast have already been preparing but anyone can be in the Chorus and take part in a range of brilliant and diverse scenes playing mariners and a pack of hounds!
Anyone can be in the Chorus just by signing up at the Intro; Sat 26th January 2013

Workshop: General Drama

Next term (when the option reverts to the mornings) we will be focussing on how different theatre is created for different audiences. For example, theatre for a deaf audience, a toddlers’ audience, a multilingual audience, a moving audience, an in-house audience.
This is the option for members who do not have the time to commit to the production or would rather get familiar with (or revise) the basic principles of acting, drama and theatre. It will be a lot of fun as well as being informative. Each week will be self-contained so if you miss a week you only need to catch up on company admin and not session work. (Obviously the more sessions you attend, the more you will learn and develop). We will be looking at a wide range of topics as we explore their relationship with an audience, and how we need to alter and adapt. We will be developing performance techniques, such as; physicality, voice work, stagecraft, accents, teamwork, mime, and period movement, learning how they suit and impact on a variety of audiences. You will receive handouts from this workshop to help you retain and build on the work we have done in sessions. There will be a Sharing at the end of term for company members, family and friends.
This option will really help you to assess your commitment levels and stamina before committing to a show! If you are newer to the company or are moving up from Stage1, this is a good option for you.

Afternoons 1.30 – 5pm

Production: The Tempest Cast (plus optional Chorus)

The main cast of the show will need to stay all day every week unless this has been prearranged. The Chorus will only attend the mornings, (apart from 2nd Feb, 2nd and 9th March and 13th April for concepts and runs etc). If any member of the chorus wants to stay and watch the afternoon rehearsals they will be very welcome but they will not be rehearsing additional scenes – it will be purely so they can absorb as much of the play as possible (with a view to essays and exams!) Please see other sheet for full show details.

Skills Workshop: Physical Theatre

The Physical Theatre option will be a demanding but rewarding workshop suitable for Stage2 members who are interested in looking  at ways to explore narrative, text and performance through movement rather than speech and already have an understanding of theatre, drama and performing. This option is all about creativity and will be mostly practical, looking at devising processes, imagination and collaboration (team work). There will however also be a small theory element addressing key practitioners to help shape our understanding of our physical work. I will also make time for anyone who wants extra help with the practitioners on the syllabus for GCSEs or A Levels.

It will be an intensive and exciting workshop with loads of new things to learn and (over the course of the term) we will create our own mini company to put together a physical theatre performance for the Sharing at the end of term - because of this, it is important that you check you are able to attend most weeks when you choose this option as each week’s session will follow on from the last. (Make sure you sort out efficient note takers and systems!) This option is open to anyone, although it will be hard work, it doesn't matter whether you have dance experience, have been in a stylised play with Stage2 or have no experience at all - all you need is some enthusiasm and drive.

Workshop: Stage1

Stage1 is our group for anyone under the age of 10. All 7 and 8 year olds have to do this option. 9 and 10 year olds can choose whether to do Stage1 or Stage2 or both, but if they are considering Stage2 they must come to the Stage2 Intro on 26th January 9.30am – 2.30pm and then discuss their final choices with us at the end of the session.
This is a friendly group where members mix, learn and have lots of fun in a secure environment with other enthusiastic and willing members! Members participate in fun games, drama exercises and creative play every Saturday afternoon!
At the end of term there will be a Sharing, giving the opportunity for friends and family to come and see some of the term’s work.
